Acne Types

Types of Acne Treated

Sebaceous glands produce a substance called sebum (oil), which is responsible for keeping skin and hair moisturized. When sebum, which normally drains to the skin’s surface, gets blocked in the follicles or “pores”, bacteria begins to grow. This bacteria, propionibacterium acnes, results in acne vulgaris (acne), commonly indicated by blackheads, whiteheads and other types of “pimples” and skin blemishes.

The clearCONCEPT process is a proven, clinically effective treatment for all types of acne:

Mild to Moderate Acne

  • Blackheads – an open comedone (blemish) that occurs when a pore is partially blocked by sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria. The black color is the result of the skin’s pigment, melanin, reacting with oxygen in the air. A blackhead has a longer life span than pustules and whiteheads and may be deeper within the skin, often taking a long time to clear.
  • Whiteheads – a closed comedone that occurs when a pore is completely blocked, trapping sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells and resulting in a white appearance on the surface.
  • Papules – small, red, tender bumps with no “head” (white or yellow center).
  • Pustules – similar to an inflamed whitehead, appearing as a red circle with a white or yellow center.

Severe Acne

  • Nodules -- large, hard bumps under the skin's surface that can be painful and last for long periods of time. Scarring is common with this condition.
  • Cysts -- similar to a nodule, but 5 mm or more in diameter and pus-filled. Cystic acne can be painful, and scarring is common. Treating cystic acne requires special care.
